Pointing a phone at the sky to install a modem
A companion mobile app for satellite user-terminal installations. It uses the camera to find a viable physical site, then walks the installer through configuration step by step.
The client and the situation
A satellite internet service connecting millions of people across the Americas, in the business for more than 50 years. The brief was an intuitive standalone mobile application for User Terminal installations.
How we approached it
- Camera-based site assessment accounting for environmental factors before configuration begins.
- Step-by-step guided instructions for specific installation configurations.
- First phase in English for installers and end users, covering tests, updates, satellite data and software bundles.
- A framework built in from the start to support additional languages in later phases.
The interesting part. A new kind of user journey to design. It borrows from liveness detection to track movement, height, angle and tilt, so an installed antenna is not obstructed by buildings or trees and actually performs.
